As an artist, Ben Schachter is fascinated by the intricate yet logical systems that have been developed to assist Jews to live a religious life within contemporary society. Seeing a similarity between these systems and the strategies employed by conceptual artists to create systems that determine the form of their art, Schachter applies some of the rules of Jewish living, such as being kosher and non-kosher, to contemporary art. Through his use of material his work brings Jewish ideas to a wider audience through contemporary art as much as it brings contemporary art to communities who may not have much experience with it.

Collector Jason Schoen will host a gallery talk of his exhibition, Concerning the 1930s in Art: Paintings from the Schoen Collection. The exhibition will be Jan. 24 through May 16 at The Westmoreland. Schoen will share his perspective on American art created in the 1930s, his personal experiences about living with his collection, and the relationships he developed with the artists whose work he collected. The first painting of the Depression era entered the personal collection of Schoen in 1979, and marked a turning point in the way he collected art of the period. “My goal was to create a collection of regional art which seen in its totality can serve as a
study collection and introduction to an era, as a slice of life and a window onto an important period in American art.”
