| On May 31, 1889, a neglected dam and a phenomenal storm led to a catastrophe in which 2,209 people died, tens of thousands were left homeless and a prospering city became a wasteland. The Johnstown Flood Museum recreates this shocking episode in American history, showing what happened and why – and the city’s triumphant recovery. Exhibits, artifacts, a multimedia map and a temporary house used to shelter survivors are joined by an Academy Award-winning documentary, “The Johnstown Flood.” Hours: Seven days a week year-round from 10 am-5 pm; from Memorial Day to Labor Day, extended opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am-7 pm. | Latrobe Art Center is a community art center with eighty eight, mostly local, artists as gallery participants. With six scheduled shows a year and “special” shows thrown in for variety, there is never a boring time at LAC. All art is original to the artist and for sale all the time. Classes are scheduled three times a year with a wide variety of subjects and range from beginner to expert, for children as young as six and never too old to learn. Workshops are scheduled with local and nationally known artists in all media. Free programs are available for groups and include a gallery tour and scavenger hunt. When time is not an issue, a project may be included. Since 2002, LAC has been the place of choice classes, workshops and beautiful original art for home, office and life.
